Welcome and thank you for choosing Burton Middle School. I have had the privilege of serving as Burton Middle School's principal for the last five years. Burton Middle is a Cultural Center on the south side of Grand Rapids dedicated to empowering our scholars with the skills and knowledge necessary to impact and change their community.

At Burton Middle School, we believe in establishing strong partnership between scholars, caregivers, and the community. We recognize that caregivers are the primary educators of their child, and we work collaboratively with each family to help our scholars take ownership of their education and develop a positive outlook of their future. We believe in creating an environment of high expectations, respect, open communication, diversity of ideas, and trust.
Additionally, Burton Middle School is proud to serve as a Cultural Center for middle school scholars in southwest Grand Rapids. Our staff is trained to support English Learners, and our language lab classes are designed to help develop scholars’ English and Spanish skills. We know that our scholars learn best when their cultures are valued. Therefore, we welcome and celebrate scholars’ cultural diversity.
We have incorporated distance learning for years and are poised to be a leader in the district as a blended model of new technologies and old practices, giving our students the best of both worlds. Our 1-to-1 student technology device approach ensures that every student has the opportunity to learn inside and outside the classroom.

The Grand Rapids Board of Education is piloting a new initiative to provide more opportunities for the public to engage in dialogue with the Board of Education.
The day Grand Rapids Public Schools scholars return from Spring Break, they’ll have a chance to witness a rare natural phenomenon -- a solar eclipse.
Grand Rapids Public Schools participated in the Unified Champion Basketball Tournament put on by Special Olympics Michigan.
