The Grand Rapids Board of Education affirms the right of any student who has a communicable disease or infection that is not known to be spread by any form of casual contact. Those include the rights to attend school and receive the same services as any other student and the right, by law, not to disclose bloodborne pathogen infection status to anyone in the school system. Employees will treat as highly confidential any information about bloodborne pathogen infection status that is voluntarily offered by the student or parent(s)/guardian(s).

The Board also affirms the necessity of training personnel and students in the implementation of Universal Precautions when handling blood or body fluids within the school setting or on school buses. The Board will require ongoing instruction for personnel and students on the principal methods by which blood borne pathogens are spread and the best methods for their restriction and prevention.
