Dear GRPS Staff,
As we prepare for the new school year, we want to share an important update regarding cell phones in our schools.
The State of Michigan has enacted a law requiring school districts to have a policy that prohibits scholars from using wireless communication devices during instructional time. The law takes effect with the 2026-27 school year. GRPS policy has been updated to provide additional clarity and align with new state law.
Grades K-5:Electronic devices are not permitted to be used, or in a scholar's possession, at any time during school hours.
Grades 6-12:Electronic devices may be used outside of instructional time only. During instructional time, all electronic devices must be powered off and securely stored.
The policy does allow for exceptions including emergencies, medical needs, IEP/504 accommodations, and school-authorized academic use.
Our goal is to create learning environments where scholars can focus, engage with their teachers and classmates, and make the most of every instructional minute. We ask our families to support these expectations by discussing them with scholars before the school year begins. We also ask staff to consistently reinforce the policy and help scholars understand that these expectations are designed to support their success.
Thank you for your partnership.
Sincerely,
Leadriane Roby, Ph.D.
Superintendent
