GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (GRPS) -- Grand Rapids University Preparatory Academy (UPREP) has officially broken ground on an expansion project that will add student learning & wellness programs, establish a technological hub for scholars, and build a state-of-the-art gymnasium.

“When I look around at those standing here today, I see proof that partnership works - that when a community invests in its young people, extraordinary things can happen,” said Wayman Britt, Co-Chair of the capital campaign.

“This facility is designed to help students thrive academically, emotionally, socially, and physically. We are building a space that mirrors the future our students deserve,” said Brian Cloyd, Co-Chair of the capital campaign.

Designed to support a growing scholar population, the 10,100-square-foot addition will provide much-needed classroom space along with a modern fitness area that serves as a hub for activity and learning. The flexible space will also accommodate school events, scholar-led activities, and regional gatherings.

“The Learning and Wellness Center represents our commitment to educating the whole child. It means scholars will have greater access to wellness resources, innovative learning spaces, technology, the arts, career exploration, and opportunities that prepare them not just for graduation but for life,” said Kenyatta Hill-Hall, UPREP Principal.

The expansion is funded through a $7 million “Learn More, Live Well” capital campaign.

“This center reflects the very best of what can happen when schools, philanthropy, business leaders, and community partners rally around a shared vision. Together, we can create opportunities that will shape this community for decades,” said John Kennedy, Honorary Chair of the capital campaign.

“This school offers every student the opportunity to realize their potential and build a successful future. Everything about this project is designed to help young people learn, grow, and prepare for life after high school,” said Steve Van Andel, Honorary Chair of the capital campaign.
