GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (GRPS) - The Union Redhawks and Ottawa Hills Bengals delivered an exciting soccer matchup featuring shifting momentum, two penalty kicks, and spectacular saves from both goalkeepers. With postseason play just around the corner, both teams brought plenty of intensity to the pitch in a game that had a little bit of everything.
Union struck first, building a commanding 2-0 lead in the first half behind a pair of goals from Espoir Mwenyi. With his combination of speed and shot strength, Mwenyi demanded constant defensive attention from the Bengals and proved difficult to contain. However, Ottawa Hills responded with a penalty kick of their own before halftime, cutting the deficit to 2-1 and giving the Bengals momentum heading into the break.
The teams battled back and forth throughout much of the second half, trading attacks and testing each other's defenses. Ottawa Hills goalkeeper Brennan Workman came up with several monster saves to keep the Bengals within striking distance, while Everett Willink helped control the middle of the pitch to keep Ottawa Hills competitive.
With pressure in the box, Union eventually earned a penalty kick of its own, and Carlos Meneses stepped up to convert, extending the Redhawks' advantage to 3-1. The goal provided some breathing room, and Union maintained its two-goal cushion the rest of the way to secure the victory.
The Redhawks now turn their attention to the postseason after finishing second in the highly competitive OK Gold Conference. Union enters the final stretch of the regular season at 13-3-1 overall and will face Spring Lake on October 12 before opening district play at Forest Hills Northern on Wednesday, October 14.
Ottawa Hills, meanwhile, currently holds a 4-10-3 record. The Bengals will face Forest Hills Northern on October 12 before traveling to Traverse City Central for their district matchup on Thursday, October 15.
