GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (GRPS) -- Burton Elementary School came alive during its fourth annual Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration, as scholars gathered to explore, celebrate, and honor the rich cultures and traditions of Latin America.
As has become tradition, the celebration kicked off with a school-wide parade, with each class proudly waving the flag of its assigned country. Scholars wore handmade headdresses and other memorabilia inspired by the cultures they represented. As the parade got underway, one kindergarten scholar exclaimed, “This is the best day ever!” A nearby classmate enthusiastically chimed in, “¡Sí, sí, sí!”
After the parade, scholars rotated through six interactive stations: lotería, snacks, dance, soccer, crafts, and music. Each offered a unique opportunity to experience cultural traditions through hands-on activities. One fourth-grade scholar expressed their excitement while heading to rotations, saying, “I cannot wait to go to the gym to dance!”
The celebration also brought together volunteers from local colleges and community organizations, whose support helped make the day possible. Their participation highlighted the importance of community partnerships in creating meaningful experiences for Burton scholars.
With laughter, dancing, hands-on activities, and opportunities to learn from one another, the celebration brought Hispanic heritage to life across Burton Elementary School. The enthusiasm of scholars, staff, families, and volunteers made the fourth annual event a memorable day of discovery, cultural expression, and school-wide pride.
