Grand Rapids, Mich. (GRPS) -- The Grand Rapids Board of Education approved the 2026–27 budget on Monday, making strategic investments in educators, curriculum, bilingual resources, and opportunities for scholars while continuing efforts to reduce expenses. 

Total expenses are budgeted at $281 million, a $7 million decrease from the previous school year. Even as overall spending is reduced, the budget contains investments that will directly impact scholars. 

The budget includes investments in a new science curriculum and training to support inquiry-based practices as part of the OpenSciEd adoption, new bilingual and English Language Arts resources and training opportunities to support implementation of the Science of Reading, and additional dual enrollment opportunities as scholar participation continues to grow. 

As the district works to improve financial sustainability, there are reductions being made. This includes the elimination of one Chief Area Instructional Leader Cabinet position and the closure of the Office of the Ombuds. Districtwide schools have worked to align staffing levels with current enrollment, leading to a reduction of some positions. The district is working to find new positions for displaced staff by filling vacancies. The district will also cut expenses by limiting cell phone stipends and maintaining a freeze on out-of-state travel unless it is funded through external sources. 

"This budget reflects our commitment to making fiscally responsible decisions that preserve the long-term stability of Grand Rapids Public Schools while continuing to invest in our scholars and staff," said Superintendent Dr. Leadriane Roby. "We have made difficult but strategic choices that prioritize equity and sustainability. We are ensuring that GRPS remains well-positioned to support scholar success now and in the future."
