GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (GRPS) -- Grand Rapids Public Schools middle school volleyball teams brought the energy on Saturday, October 17, competing in an eight-hour, 14-team double-elimination tournament across four courts. After a full day of intense rallies, strong defensive efforts, and exciting finishes, the tournament culminated in a thrilling championship showdown between City 1 and UPREP 1.
The tournament’s final four teams were City 1, UPREP 1, CA Frost 1, and Harrison, setting the stage for a competitive finish. Ultimately, the day came down to City 1 and UPREP 1, who faced each other three times throughout the tournament.
City 1’s run to the championship was a team effort, with strong contributions from players across the lineup, including Monica Hodges at libero and Annie Weston with solid front-row hitting throughout the day. Their efforts, along with those of their teammates, helped City 1 navigate the demanding double-elimination bracket and earn its place in the finals.
The double-elimination format made for an especially exciting finish. In the first championship match, City 1 had an opportunity to claim the title, but UPREP 1 had other plans. Led by the consistent play of eighth graders Maya Williams and Abigail Mosby, along with seventh grader Noelani Ivy, UPREP 1 battled to a three-set victory, handing City 1 its first loss of the season and forcing a second championship match.
With the title on the line, City 1 and UPREP 1 returned to the court for one final matchup. After splitting the first two sets, the teams faced a winner-take-all third set in a fitting conclusion to a day in which they had already faced each other twice.
Seventh grader Charlie Dionne subbed into the deciding third set to help City 1 close things out. After the teams traded points, a strong defensive play by City kept the rally alive and set up a crucial opportunity. Dionne stepped to the service line and delivered a strong serve. UPREP 1 returned the ball, City 1 kept it in play, and Dionne set up a teammate for the championship-winning hit.
The final point capped a memorable day of middle school volleyball, showcasing impressive performances from teams across GRPS. From hard-fought rallies to a championship that came down to the final set, the tournament highlighted the talent, teamwork, and competitive spirit of the district’s scholar-athletes.
