GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — For nearly two decades, Ashley Covington has been dedicated to helping scholars discover their confidence and potential. As head counselor at Grand Rapids Learning Center, she says the relationships she builds are what make her work meaningful.
“What I enjoy most about my job is working with students,” Covington said. “I have always loved to see them light up when they learn something new and when they gain confidence in themselves. I have been fortunate to witness it for nearly 20 years, both as a teacher and as a counselor, and it will never get old!”
Covington’s connection to Grand Rapids Public Schools runs deep. As a graduate of Ottawa Hills High School, she returned to the district to give back to her community.
“It is truly a unique and rewarding experience to work alongside some of my former teachers and pour into students the way they had poured into me,” she said. “I have worked in six buildings throughout the district, and each has helped me grow in different ways.”
Covington says her goal is to ensure scholars leave her office knowing they have someone who believes in them.
“I hope that the students walk away from conversations with me knowing their potential and their worth,” she said. “When I unexpectedly hear from former students, it makes my day and makes me feel like I am doing something right.”
Through her work at Grand Rapids Learning Center, Covington continues to champion scholars, helping them build confidence and recognize their potential.
