GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (GRPS) — The Grand Rapids Board of Education has named its board chambers "The Robert Dean Auditorium" in honor of the longtime community leader, pastor, and public servant.
"I feel honored," Bishop Robert Dean said during the dedication ceremony at the August 10 Board of Education meeting. "It was a privilege to sit in this seat as Board President. I was blessed to be here. I thank you for the blessing, the acknowledgement. I appreciate you Superintendent."
Born in Grand Rapids in 1954, he graduated from Grand Rapids Central High School in 1972. He attended Ferris State College, earning a doctorate in theology.
In 1980, he founded New Life Church of God in Christ in Grand Rapids, where he serves as senior pastor. His commitment to public service includes serving on the Grand Rapids Board of Education, including as board president, as well as serving as a Grand Rapids City Commissioner and Michigan State Representative.
“He was elected to the school board in 1990 and served seven years. He served as president advocating for educational equity and student success," Rev. Kenneth Hoskins told the board. "He promoted strong partnerships between schools, families, and the community. That is something that he does every day."
Dr. Betty Dean, who is celebrating 52 years of marriage with Bishop Dean, told board members that her husband "loves the city of Grand Rapids.”
