Dear GRPS Staff,

As we prepare to welcome a new school year, I’m writing to share that we have identified a new leader for our learning community. Michelle Foreman has been named Principal of César E. Chávez Elementary School.

Principal Foreman brings a wealth of experience to Grand Rapids Public Schools. She joins us from the Lansing School District, where she served as an administrator providing strategic leadership and systems-level support across the district. Her experience also includes serving as a teacher, principal and district-level leader.

She shares the following message:

“I am excited to join the César E. Chávez Elementary School community and to be part of a school where every scholar is encouraged to be exceptional every day by embracing who they are, discovering who they can become and never being afraid to let their unique strengths shine. I believe excellence in education is not about being like everyone else - it is about empowering every scholar to learn, grow and become the very best version of themselves. When students know that who they are matters, they gain the confidence to dream boldly, overcome challenges, and make a meaningful difference in the world.”

We are also grateful to retired GRPS principal Karla Finn for her willingness to provide additional support at César E. Chávez Elementary. She will spend time at Chávez through October to help ensure a smooth transition as Principal Foreman begins her leadership.

Please join me in welcoming Principal Foreman to GRPS. We look forward to beginning a new school year together on Monday, August 24!

Sincerely,

Leadriane Roby, Ph.D.
Superintendent
