GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (GRPS) -- GRPS will unveil initial renderings of the new elementary school, set to open in 2027 at the Aberdeen Academy site, during a community meeting in April.

The informational meeting will take place on Tuesday, April 15, from 5 to 6 p.m. at Aberdeen Academy (928 Aberdeen St. NE). At the meeting, architects will present site plans and school renderings. Community members will also have the opportunity to ask questions and share feedback.

This $38 million project, the largest funded by the Reimagine GRPS bond approved in 2023, represents a significant investment in the future of education in Grand Rapids.

"We are thrilled to share this exciting update with our community as anticipation grows for the first new school in northeast Grand Rapids in 60 years," said Alex Smart, GRPS Executive Director of Facilities and Operations. "This new school will provide an innovative and inspiring learning environment for our scholars and staff. Our architects have thoughtfully integrated input from our Teaching and Learning team, ensuring the space meets the needs of our students. Additionally, we are committed to honoring the history of the current building by showcasing elements inside this modern, state-of-the-art school."

The new school will be constructed behind the current Aberdeen Academy, allowing learning to continue uninterrupted. Once open in 2027, it will replace the current Aberdeen and Palmer schools. After the new school opens, the current Aberdeen building will be demolished.

Following the meeting, site plans and renderings will be published on grps.org.
