“GRPS Champions” is a web series published every Monday celebrating the incredible work of GRPS team members.

Grand Rapids, Mich. (GRPS) – For three decades, Security Officer Faustino Garcia has been a steady presence at Grand Rapids Public Schools. His long-standing commitment was formally recognized earlier this year when he was inducted into the Ottawa Hills High School Hall of Fame, a fitting tribute to his impactful legacy.

Garcia's passion for his role shines brightest in his interactions with scholars.

"I enjoy working for the students," he shares. “When I visit different elementary schools, I love seeing the students smile, shake my hand, and ask if I’m a police officer. I tell them, ‘No, I work for the schools, keeping them and their schools safe.’”

The trust and admiration scholars show him is deeply rewarding, as is the connection he feels when parents, who remember him from their own school days, introduce him to their children. "He was my security officer when I was in school," they say, asking him to continue looking after the next generation.

Garcia’s journey with GRPS started by serving as a wrestling coach at Ottawa Hills High School, a role he held for 27 years. Encouraged by his sister, who saw his potential for a security role, he applied and found his calling.

His greatest joy comes at graduation.

"At the end of the day, when they say, 'Thank you, Mr. Garcia,' it's the best feeling," he reflects. "Seeing [families] smile and cry because their baby graduated is a beautiful moment.”
