GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (GRPS) -- At Congress Elementary, music instruction is a vibrant part of the school experience, giving every scholar the opportunity to explore both vocal and instrumental performance. Beginning in the early grades, scholars build foundational skills through singing, rhythm work, and introductory string instruction. By fifth grade, they expand their musicianship to include violin, viola, and cello, developing technique, ensemble awareness, and confidence as performers.
A cornerstone of the program is the Congress Honors Orchestra, an elective program open to any interested fifth grader. This ensemble allows scholars to deepen their musical skills through advanced playing and performance.
Honors Orchestra members rehearse during lunch recess every Friday, but many also choose to practice at home. This level of dedication allows them to tackle longer, more complex pieces throughout the year. Two of those pieces will be performed at the school’s spring concert.
Across all grade levels, music classes follow a structured routine that includes vocal warm-ups, instrument tuning, and focused rehearsal time. Scholars are challenged to memorize much of their performance material, strengthening both musical understanding and stage presence. The program emphasizes joy, discipline, and creative expression, culminating in performances that reflect weeks of preparation and growth.
This year’s concert will also feature a special fifth-grade vocal performance of “Over There is My Future,” a piece that reflects an important transition for students preparing to leave Congress and begin middle school.
“When I heard this song, I immediately thought of my scholars who will be leaving Congress to head to middle school next year,” said music teacher Jennifer Ryan. “They have been doing a fantastic job learning it so far.” The selection highlights both their musical growth and the excitement of what lies ahead.
Upcoming Event:
The Congress music program will present its spring concert on Wednesday, May 6 at 6:00 PM at Trinity United Methodist Church (1100 Lake Dr. SE). The performance will feature students in grades 1–5, including a special appearance by the Honors Orchestra.
