GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (GRPS) – City High Middle School Band Director Matthew Palmieri has been named Band Teacher of the Year by the Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association (MSBOA), the highest honor the organization awards to band educators statewide.
Palmieri was previously recognized as MSBOA District 10 Band Teacher of the Year, earning him a nomination for the statewide award.
“Mr. Palmieri's work goes far beyond directing a band,” explained Dan Van Til, Director of Fine Arts & Physical Education/Health Programs. “He helps young musicians discover their confidence, their sound, and their love of music. Being recognized by fellow band and orchestra educators makes this honor especially meaningful and reflects the respect he has earned through his dedication to students and his commitment to strengthening band education across Michigan.”
Over the past 24 years, Palmieri has taught band at every grade level. Now in his first year at City High Middle School, he previously led band programs at Southwest Elementary and Southwest Middle High School.
Palmieri’s impact is felt throughout our community. He teaches at Calvin University, works with several summer band programs, and maintains an active private tuba and euphonium studio. He also performs with the Grand Rapids Symphonic Band, the Beer City Winds, and leads Grand Rapids Tuba Christmas, the largest event of its kind in Michigan with 175 tuba and euphonium players participating.
