GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (GRPS) – The Greater Grand Rapids NAACP honored GRPS Ombudsperson Maleika Joubert Brown with the “Role Model Education Award Tribute” during the 59th Annual Freedom Fund Gala and Awards.

“This recognition is not only about her personal achievements, but about lifting up education as a civil rights issue,” shared Cle J. Jackson, President of the Greater Grand Rapids NAACP.

In a career dedicated to education, Brown has served as a teacher, instructional coach, curriculum supervisor, Director of Professional Learning, Director of Equity and Inclusion, and is now the district’s inaugural Ombudsperson.

“I have been privileged to serve with phenomenal educators and have what I hope is a lasting impact on the lives of equally phenomenal scholars,” Brown said. “It is important to me that I acknowledge that each of these colleagues and students has shaped the educator I am today.  I believe with all my heart that we as educators are mentored by and learn from our students as much as they learn from us.  This is my reality, and I lean into it every day.  If I am a role model, which I strive to be and am honored to be recognized as one as I receive this award, it is because I have allowed myself to be molded and shaped by the very people I serve daily.”

Brown launched the Office of the Ombuds at GRPS in 2023. She is dedicated to empowering scholars, families, caregivers, employees, and our community by providing a safe, impartial, and confidential space to navigate, mediate and resolve concerns, conflicts, and issues in our educational institution.

“She has been relentless in her pursuit of equity, ensuring that every student, regardless of background or circumstance, has a fair chance to thrive,” Jackson said. “She stands as a role model not only in education, but in the ongoing struggle for justice, equity, and opportunity for all. Her life’s work reminds us that when we fight for education, we are truly fighting for civil rights.”
