GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (GRPS) — Melvin Shelton believes that the obstacles scholars face in their life today do not have to determine their future. As a Scholar Success Coordinator at Westwood Middle School, he works to show that with perseverance and support they can achieve their goals.

His path is deeply connected to his own life experiences.

“I chose to work at GRPS because I feel a responsibility to give back to students who face challenges similar to those I experienced growing up,” Shelton said. “I want them to know that obstacles do not define their future and that it is possible to overcome adversity and beat the odds.”

In his role, Shelton focuses on building meaningful relationships.

“I believe I make an impact by modeling perseverance, resilience, and consistency,” Shelton said. “I strive to be a positive role model and someone students can look up to - showing them through my actions that success is attainable with hard work and determination.”

Daily interactions with scholars are what Shelton values most.

“What I enjoy most about my job is working directly with students - pouring into their lives, building relationships, and watching them grow both academically and personally,” he said.

By sharing his story and supporting scholars through their own journeys, Shelton hopes to inspire students to believe in themselves and recognize that their futures are full of possibility.
