Become a Certified Mentor

Mentor Certification is earned by completing the Action Research Project, a semester-long cohort experience designed to deepen mentoring practice. Prerequisite: Successful completion of all 100- and 200-level Mentor Academy courses is required before enrolling in the Action Research Project. 

Mentor compensation for staff hired/identified after March 1 may be prorated based on percentage of days assigned as a mentor and completion of mentor meeting and Mentor Academy requirements.  

Mentors are responsible for completing the Mentor/ Mentee Meeting Log documenting and reporting dates, times, and focus of interactions appropriate to mentee’s level of experience in the GRPS Electronic Mentor Matching system.  

Mentor Logs must be completed and approved electronically by the last day of the school year to receive compensation. 

Mentor must read, complete, respond to, and submit communication requests in a timely manner, including but not limited to online surveys and email communication. 

 Professional Learning: Article 22 Contract language: Certified= mentors who have completed the entire Mentor Academy Professional Learning Series, which consists of introductory, intermediate and advanced level courses (MA 100, 200 and 300)

*The term “certified” in this case is not related to Michigan Department of Education certification nor is it synonymous with the term “Trained”. 

Note: Mentors who have attended Mentor Academy courses (MA100-300) from September2014-present may apply those MA100-300 level courses to the certification requirement. Mentor classes completed prior to September 2014 may not be applied to the certification requirement. Please refer to your transcripts to identify MA courses previously taken. 

GRPS Non-certified mentors supporting new staff hired or identified before March 2 will attend at least two (2) Mentor Academy courses yearly to be eligible for compensation. Non-certified mentors supporting new staff hired or identified after March 1 will attend at least one (1) Mentor Academy course yearly to be eligible for compensation. 

GRPS Certified mentors will attend and/or facilitate at least one (1) Mentor Academy session yearly to maintain certification and be eligible for compensation.

Note: The first two mentor courses will be applied to your mentor PD requirement. You can choose to take additional Mentor PD Courses (after meeting your Mentor PD requirement)which can be applied towards Above and Beyond PD credit. These additional MA courses will count towards the mentor certification requirement and will earn SCECH credit that can be used for certification renewal.
