GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (GRPS) — In his fourth-grade classroom at Aberdeen Academy, Riley Rutledge is driven by the moments when learning clicks.
“The thing I enjoy most about teaching is when I see kids have that ‘a-ha!’ moment where something clicks in their brain,” Rutledge said. “I also enjoy teaching science and watching the scientific process at work through my science lessons.”
Rutledge is especially motivated by making an impact in the community he calls home.
“I chose to work at GRPS because I wanted to work in the community that I live in and hopefully make a difference for the students that live here,” he said. “I think the biggest impact I have is trying to be a role model for my students.”
Beyond his own classroom, Rutledge works to strengthen the broader school community. He supports long-term substitute teachers, collaborates with administrators, and assists fellow staff members when needed.
“I also worked to pioneer an after-school program to help our scholars who needed extra support,” he explained.
Through steady encouragement and a commitment to scholars, Mr. Rutledge continues to make a difference — one “a-ha!” moment at a time.
