GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (GRPS) – A new season marks a new chapter for Union High School basketball as Theron Brown steps in to lead the Redhawks boys varsity team.

“I’m coaching the game that I love,” Brown said. “It's very important to me to be able to share my love of the game.”

Brown brings a wealth of experience to the role. He played basketball at Grand Rapids Community College and Davenport University, and has spent more than a decade coaching in the Grand Rapids area. He also serves as the Scholar Success Coordinator at Grand Rapids Montessori Middle High School.

“I’m very excited to use the game of basketball to help mature and grow young men,” he said. “For a lot of our kids, this is a safe space for them. I’m just happy that I am the person that they look forward to coming to see every day.”

For Brown, coaching goes far beyond wins and losses. He will focus on building a culture that supports personal growth.

“Basketball is a lot of Xs and Os, and you can get caught up in that,” Brown explained. “But at the same time, it's just making sure we’re implementing life lessons. I want these young men to leave here and say, ‘Coach Brown cared for me.’”

The Redhawks open their season Dec. 5 on the road against Zeeland West High School and play their first home game Dec. 8 against Spring Lake High School.

Tryouts for the team are Nov. 12 – 14 from 3:30 – 5 p.m. at Union High School.
