Student Health Services
Student health services, including mental health services, shall only be provided to students whose parents/legal guardians, or other authorized representatives, have consented. The District shall obtain informed parent(s)/guardian(s) consent as required by and in accordance with the Michigan Mental Health Code and applicable federal law.
Student Health Records
Student health records are a part of the students' overall education record and shall be stored in a safe and secure manner in compliance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). If the District provides health services for which it transmits health information electronically, such as submitting claims for payment to Medicaid or other health insurance plans, student records shall be also stored and secured in accordance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA).
Release of Information
All staff have the responsibility to maintain the confidentiality of student health records, including mental health records. Student health records shall only be released to third parties upon the written consent of parent(s)/guardian(s), legally authorized representatives, or when otherwise required by law. Only information that meets the specific request shall be provided.
