Adults In Need of Protective Services
The Board of Education of the Grand Rapids Public Schools recognizing the serious local, state, and national problems of adult abuse, neglect, exploitation, and otherwise endangered, shall work vigorously to expose these problems by identifying suspected cases, and by reporting suspected cases to duly constituted authorities as required by Michigan law.
Any employee of the Grand Rapids Public Schools who, in the course of carrying out their job responsibilities, has reason to believe that an adult has been abused, neglected, exploited, or is endangered, shall immediately make, or cause to be made, an oral report of the case to the Adult Protective Services Unit of the Kent County Department of Social Services, as required by law, and shall immediately notify his/her immediate supervisor of this action. Any doubt about reporting a suspected case shall be resolved in favor of the adult about whom abuse, neglect, exploitation, or endangerment is suspected, and shall be reported immediately.
The Board of Education recognizes that personnel acting in good faith are immune from civil and/or criminal liability when reporting suspected adult abuse, neglect, exploitation, or endangerment; and that a person, required by law to report such an instance, who fails to do so, is civilly liable for damages proximately caused by the failure, as provided by law.
The Board of Education of the Grand Rapids Public Schools shall provide in-service opportunities to establish an awareness on the part of school personnel of the recognition of and obligations of reporting suspected cases.
