GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (GRPS) -- At Union High School, the girls’ tennis team has become a close-knit group of friends, teammates, and rising competitors ready to give their all on the court. Although the team is young - featuring multiple freshmen and sophomores with only one senior this year - talent runs deep. One standout freshman is already ranked sixth in the state through the United States Tennis Association (USTA), signaling a promising future for the Redhawks.
Despite their youth, the team maintains a strong culture of support and camaraderie, evident in the bond between returning doubles partners Lauren Kettle and Meghan Stewart.
“Tennis is very awesome. I’m so glad I decided to play,” said Lauren Kettle. Her doubles partner, Meghan Stewart, added, “The team lifts you up and no one gets mad if you make a mistake.”
Union’s success isn’t limited to the court. Out of more than 300 Division I programs, the Redhawks ranked second in the state for All-State Academics last year, demonstrating that their commitment to excellence extends into the classroom.
This spring, the program is taking steps to enhance the experience for both players and spectators. Four new benches are being installed around the courts, giving fans a comfortable place to watch matches. Meanwhile, the courts, resurfaced just two years ago, continue to provide a safe and consistent playing surface.
The season also features exciting competitions that will put the Redhawks’ skills to the test. Highlights include two Redhawk Invitationals: the first on April 25 against Kenowa Hills, Fremont, and Kalamazoo Central, and the second on May 2 against Ottawa Hills, Wyoming, and Hastings. These events not only challenge the team but also provide an opportunity to showcase the courtside upgrades.
Guiding the team through these challenges is Coach Bill Schaefer, a West Michigan coaching veteran with more than 40 years of experience. He has never had a losing season at Union and maintains a career win rate over 70%, earning both the USTA Dedication Award and the State Coaches Association Award. Under his leadership, the Redhawks continue to develop not only as athletes but as students and teammates.
With a combination of talent, teamwork, strong leadership, and a supportive community, the Union girls’ tennis team is poised for another memorable season both on and off the court.
