GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (GRPS) – Hundreds of families attended Save A Life A Day Outreach’s Back to School Safety Bash August 16 at Alger Middle School.

The event included several free activities for kids including two bounce houses, haircuts, braiding/styling, and backpack & school supplies giveaways. Free gun locks were also available for parents.

The event was hosted at Alger Middle School thanks to a partnership between Save A Life A Day Outreach, Grand Rapids Public Schools, and several local businesses.

The Back to School Safety Bash was followed by the “It Takes a Village” event, which is held every Friday and Saturday from 6 – 10 p.m. at Alger Middle School. It is open to ages 12 through 17. Activities include music and basketball. Food is also available.

The events aimed at reducing summer violence are a collaborative effort between Grand Rapids Public Schools, the Grand Rapids Office of Oversight and Public Accountability, the Grand Rapids Urban League, Grand Valley State University, and LifeQuest Urban Outreach.

The “It Takes a Village” events continue through August 31 at both Alger Middle School and LifeQuest, 1050 Fisk Rd. SE.
