GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (GRPS) -- The countdown is on to the 32nd Grand Rapids Public Schools Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving morning in downtown Grand Rapids.
This year's run is Thursday, November 28. The Mini Trot starts at 8:10 a.m. followed by the 5K at 8:30 a.m. All race proceeds contribute to the mission of promoting healthy lifestyles and ensuring access to athletics for all GRPS scholars.
"Students participating in sports develop and perform better in almost every possible way," GRPS Superintendent Dr. Leadriane Roby said during a kickoff event outside Van Andel Arena. "Proof is in their grades, higher scores, and the ability to connect with one another in very meaningful ways. In fact, events like Turkey Trot help our athletes develop and become leaders right here in our community."
The 2023 race set two new records for the Turkey Trot. 5,834 runners participated, making it the largest 5K in Grand Rapids. The race also raised more than $100,000 for GRPS athletics.
"We believe that every student has the potential to be an educated, self-directed and contributing member to society," said GRPS Foundation President and CEO Stephanie Andrews. "By signing up to support or run the Turkey Trot, we are one step closer to keeping those kids on the court, on the field, on the track and in the pool."
This year marks Blue Care Network of Michigan’s tenth year as the presenting sponsor of the Turkey Trot. LMCU is sponsoring the Mini Trot for kids for the third year in a row.
"Turkey Trot holds a special place in my heart. Not only does it support our schools, it adds to the character of our beautiful city," explained Grand Rapids Mayor Rosalynn Bliss. "To the community partners who support this event and our children – thank you. You make this possible."
