“GRPS Champions” is a web series published every Monday celebrating the incredible work of GRPS team members.
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (GRPS) – With nearly three decades of service in Grand Rapids Public Schools, Maria Cerda’s contributions have left an indelible mark on countless scholars, families, and staff. Cerda is currently the Head Secretary at Grand Rapids Learning Center (GRLC).
“I have lived and worked in the southeast, northeast, northwest, and southwest areas of this community and I know a lot of scholars and families in the community, Cerda explained. “I am like family to all of them. When they come to our high school, they see me as GRPS family.”
She loves being part of a high school located on a college campus, where she observes scholars’ confidence grow.
“Seeing the GRLC scholars with an ambition to finish school and move on to college or careers makes me happy,” Cerda shared. “Our school opens the scholars up to clear opportunities on the college campus and career pathways.”
Becoming a secretary was Cerda’s lifelong dream. When the opportunity arose to join GRPS, she eagerly pursued it. Over the years, she has worked in multiple schools, gaining a deep understanding of the district and its community. Now, as the Head Secretary at GRLC, she plans to conclude her career at a school that feels like home.
“The first impression in the main office is very important to the culture of the school and I know I represent this with excellence,” Cerda said.
Cerda’s ability to connect with scholars and families while fostering a positive school environment underscores her commitment to the district’s mission.
