GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (GRPS) - Union High School hosted its second annual Culture Celebration on Friday, September 18, bringing scholars, staff, and the community together for an afternoon of food, talent, and cultural connection.
The celebration featured food vendors and a variety of cultural performances, including choir, dance, a fashion show, and solo acts. Approximately twenty community and school vendors were also on hand. Scholars sampled international cuisines, celebrated the talents of their peers, and connected with valuable community resources.
The event received strong support from district personnel, including Family Support Specialist Delphine Ndoriyobija, who joined the celebration by participating in an African dance performance.
Youth Advocates Nehemiah Dix and Michala Carter, along with Student Council, organized the event. Dix said the preparation was a significant commitment from the beginning of the school year.
“It's pretty much non-stop from the start of the school year until the event, but we're so proud of the way it turned out,” Dix said.
Kelly Greene, Chief Area Instructional Leader, attended the event and praised the scholars for their leadership and collaboration.
“It was a really special event! I love seeing the scholars lead and manage so many aspects of the event, especially the talent show. They did an incredible job supporting each other, cheering for each other, and demonstrating a lot of mutual respect,” Greene said.
