GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (GRPS) – Sandra (Sandy) Edwards, secretary at Mulick Park Elementary School, is serving the same community she’s called home her entire life.
“I have lived on the southeast side of Grand Rapids all my life and am a product of GRPS,” Edwards explained. “My children and some of my grandchildren attended schools in GRPS.”
A proud alumna of Congress Elementary, Harrison Park Academy, and Central High School, Edwards has worn many hats during her time with Grand Rapids Public Schools. She first got involved through the PTA, then served as a lunch aide, worked in human resources, and eventually became a school secretary.
“My calling was to utilize all my secretarial and technical knowledge and skills with my experience of loving children and people and having the best of both worlds,” Edwards said.
The most rewarding part of her job is the daily interaction with families, scholars, and staff.
“I have been blessed to have families that interact well with me,” she explained. “The children of the school are the blessings that keep me going. They are the heartbeat of the school and they bring so much joy.”
The culture among the staff at Mulick Park is another source of pride for Edwards.
“Our staff is a family. We are there for one another through many things,” she said. “We embrace our differences and encourage each other. We have cried many tears together as well as many laughs. We love each other like family.”
Edwards believes her presence at Mulick Park is no coincidence.
“God placed me here to interact with the many people that come my way. It may be that they just need a shoulder to lean on, a hug or a laugh. My role is not defined to just behind this desk, but to all aspects of who I am at Mulick Park.”
