GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (GRPS) -- Every Friday, the halls of Westwood Middle School buzz with extra excitement thanks to the Redhawk Coffee Cart, a scholar-run initiative that delivers hot beverages and big smiles to staff. Scholars in Mikaila Workman’s class take orders, craft drinks, and serve coffee, tea, or hot chocolate, brightening the day of every staff member they meet.
“The coffee cart is a great opportunity for my class to practice social skills and life skills,” Workman said.
Orders are placed the day before, and staff can personalize their drinks with cream, flavored syrup, or other add-ons. Each drink costs just $1, and at the end of the year, the money collected will go toward a reward chosen by scholars.
The program started four years ago at East Leonard Elementary School. After moving to Westwood Middle, Workman brought the coffee cart along, giving her current scholars a chance to carry on the tradition. Startup costs for the cart are covered through generous donations, with money or supplies provided by community members who want to help scholars run the operation.
Scholars practice their manners and develop communication skills while serving. They also gain real-world experience handling money and managing transactions, lessons that go far beyond the classroom.
The cart’s impact extends beyond scholars. Staff enjoy a warm drink and a cheerful Friday interaction, making the cart a small but meaningful boost to morale throughout the school.
"It's fun. I like making the coffee and delivering it,” one scholar said.
Thanks to Workman and her scholars, the Redhawk Coffee Cart has become a Friday highlight at Westwood Middle School, brewing learning, service, and community spirit into every cup.
