Frequently Asked Questions
Who is eligible to participate in K-8 Ignite?
This program is funded through federal Title I guidelines. Participation is limited to GRPS scholars who meet federal eligibility requirements. Eligible families will receive direct communication with registration details, including emails and postcards with details about how to register.
Is transportation offered?
Summer busing guidelines for summer school transportation are 0.75 miles for 6-8th graders and 0.50 for K-5 in distance from the summer site. Unless they are crossing a major street without crossing guards- then they will receive busing even closer than 0.50. Bus route information will be sent to participants in late May/early June.
Are backpacks required?
Backpacks are not required but are encouraged in order to transport scholar work home.
Are meals included?
Yes, breakfast is served from 8-8:30, and lunch is served from 12-12:30. An afternoon snack will also be provided.
Are there programs offered after 12:30 PM when Ignite concludes?
Yes. For information on the afternoon LOOP and Extended Day programs that take place from 12:30 - 3:00 PM, visit our LOOP and Extended Day page.
What will scholars be learning?
All K-8 scholars will participate in the same curriculum theme- Michigan habitats! Math, language arts, and projects will be centered around nature-based learning.
Will my scholars stay with their grade level?
Yes, classrooms are based on the grade-level that the scholar was in the previous year. For example, a current 4th grader would be put in a 4th grade classroom over the summer with their peers.
What special education services are available?
Summer school is a general education opportunity and is therefore not the same as Extended School Year (ESY) services under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) or the Michigan Administrative Rules for Special Education (MARSE). However, the Special Education Department remains committed to ensuring that scholars with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) have access to necessary supplemental aids and services that support their participation in the general education setting, as appropriate. If your child plans to participate in summer school and requires supplemental aids or accommodations to support access to the general education curriculum, please contact us so we can review and ensure appropriate supports are in place.
Will there be field trips?
Yes! Scholars will engage in field trips to Critter Barn, John Ball Zoo, the Museum, or WMCAT based on grade level.
Will scholars be graded?
No, scholars are not graded on the work they produce during summer school.
Is there a penalty for missing days of summer school?
While there are no penalties for missing a day of summer school, we do encourage that scholars participate fully in the program in order to gain meaningful support in language arts and math.
