District News

Dear Stocking Families:

I am writing to inform you about a serious incident that took place today, involving the confiscation of a gun from one of our students.

Late this morning, one of our scholars approached the school staff with information regarding a student who was suspected of being in possession of a weapon. Our team promptly responded to the report and discovered a loaded handgun in the student's backpack.

Immediate action was taken, and we contacted the Grand Rapids Police Department, who have initiated an investigation into this matter.

It saddens me that such an incident occurred within our school community today. Furthermore, it is frustrating to witness the increasing frequency of similar incidents not just in Grand Rapids, but across the nation.

I would like to take this opportunity to urge parents who own firearms to prioritize the safety of their children. It is absolutely critical that all weapons are securely locked and kept away from the reach of children. As responsible adults, we must be the first line of defense in protecting our young people. I implore you to pay close attention to what your scholars bring with them when they leave your homes.

I understand that this letter may raise concerns within our community. We are actively evaluating how best to address this collectively. Please anticipate further communication from our district leadership, providing additional information and guidance.

I am grateful that no one was harmed during this incident, and I commend the scholar who courageously came forward with the information, enabling us to take swift action. We cannot know what potential harm this scholar may have averted. I kindly request that you emphasize to your own children the importance of speaking up when they sense something is wrong.

The safety and well-being of our scholars require a full community effort, and I am thankful that we have a supportive school family that supports us in this work.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at 819-3130 or at ThomasmaM@grps.org.

Sincerely,

Michael Thomasma
Principal
