District News

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (GRPS) — Grand Rapids Public Schools has announced a full district closure for Friday, January 12 due to a significant winter storm in the forecast.

“The forecast confidence in a potentially dangerous storm is only increasing and we need to make sure we’re doing all we can to keep our scholars and staff safe,” GRPS Superintendent Dr. Leadriane Roby said. “We prefer to make these calls based on what actually materializes but with the anticipated timing of the storm impact hitting late in the morning, we need to make plans in advance for everyone’s benefit.”

This is GRPS’ second snow day of the 2023-24 school year. Sporting events scheduled for Friday and Saturday have also been canceled.

This closure is a full-district closure and cancelation including the administrative offices and all after-school activities.

Because of the potential for strong winds and heavy snow, there is a chance for widespread power outages in the wake of the storm. Families in need of assistance can contact the United Way by calling 2-1-1.

You can also find up-to date power outage information from Consumers Energy.

As an additional reminder for families, GRPS is already scheduled to be closed Monday in observance of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.
