This email was sent to all GRPS families and staff on November 19, 2024.

Dear GRPS Families and Staff,

I am writing to inform you about a deeply concerning incident that occurred this morning involving a GRPS scholar.

While waiting for the bus, a scholar was approached by a suspicious individual. Thankfully, the scholar is safe, and the Grand Rapids Police Department has a suspect in custody. We are working closely with police as they investigate this matter.

Please know that safety is our top priority. While this incident and a prior report of a suspicious person earlier this year are not believed to be connected, they serve as important reminders for us all to prioritize safety practices. We encourage families to discuss safety practices with their children, such as staying alert, traveling in groups when possible, and reporting any suspicious activity immediately.

As a community, we can take small steps to enhance safety. For example, leaving porch lights on in the morning hours can provide additional visibility for scholars walking to bus stops or school.

Thank you for your continued partnership in keeping our schools and neighborhoods safe.

Sincerely,

Larry Johnson
Chief of Staff & Executive Director of Public Safety & School Security
