GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (GRPS) – Scholars at Coit Creative Arts Academy brought four centuries of musical history to life during a powerful Black History Month concert celebrating the depth and influence of Black music.

“We’re representing over 400 years of Black History,” said Cora, a third-grader at Coit who performed “Defying Gravity” from Wicked.

The performance began with songs rooted in Africa centuries ago and moved chronologically through spirituals, gospel, jazz, soul and contemporary hits.

“What I wanted to do was tell history from a musical perspective,” explained Debra Perry, the Grammy-nominated music teacher at Coit. “The music of those times and why those different genres came about continuing to still tell the story of Black people down through the years.”

The concept resonated with the audience. Scholars delivered a moving performance while also demonstrating a deeper understanding of the cultural and historical significance behind each selection.

“My favorite part about music is when we learn and listen about Black History Month,” said Travis, a third-grader at Coit.

Perry said providing historical context helped scholars connect more meaningfully with the material.

“I did teach the history behind the songs, and then that resonated much more with the kids,” Perry said. “When they got up to perform they understood from a historical aspect the importance of them.”

By the final notes, pride filled the room - both on stage and in the audience.

“I am so proud of them,” Perry added. “They should feel very proud of themselves.”
