“GRPS Champions” is a web series published every Monday celebrating the incredible work of GRPS team members.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (GRPS) – Every day, Deb Lubbers steps into Westwood Middle School with a clear purpose: to inspire and guide her students toward success. As the school’s Library/Media Specialist, Lubbers combines her passion for education with a deep commitment to creating a positive and empowering environment.

“I love helping students navigate both their academic and personal growth,” Lubbers shared. “Watching scholars discover how to manage challenges—whether it's in their studies or in their lives—feels incredibly rewarding. I take pride in being a part of that journey, helping them build the skills and confidence they need to succeed, not just in school, but in life as well.”

Lubbers’ path to GRPS began at Sibley Elementary, where she volunteered with the Kent School Services Network. It was there that then-Principal MaryAnn Prisichenko recognized her dedication and encouraged her to apply for a preschool paraprofessional position.

“Once I stepped into that role, I realized I had found my true calling, and I quickly became invested in the work,” she said.

Since then, Lubbers has grown professionally, taking on new roles and challenges that have further cemented her love for education and GRPS.

“I’ve been fortunate to be part of teams where the staff is not only talented but also uplifting and insightful,” she explained. “That kind of collaborative, positive environment makes a big difference, especially when challenges arise.”

At the heart of Lubbers’ work is a commitment to fostering a supportive school culture.

“I believe I help create an environment where students feel supported and understood. Whether it’s helping them navigate challenges in the classroom or offering a listening ear when they’re going through tough times, I aim to be a constant source of encouragement,” Lubbers said. “I believe that every positive interaction, no matter how small, contributes to creating a school community where everyone feels valued and empowered.”

When asked why she chooses to work at Grand Rapids Public Schools, Lubbers’ answer reflects her deep connection to the district’s mission.

“I’m excited by the opportunity to be a part of a district that values progress, and I’m proud to contribute to such a dynamic and impactful community.”
