GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (GRPS) -- Dressed in a fresh firefighter uniform and flame-colored scrunchies for Crazy Hair Day, second-grader Sicily made a memorable entrance at Coit Creative Arts Academy in a firetruck.
This fall, the Grand Rapids Fire Department (GRFD) visited dozens of schools to teach second-graders important fire safety lessons.
"We try to teach fire safety - teaching them, stop, drop, and roll," explained Ruth Yokeum, who manages public education for GRFD. "Also getting out and staying out and not coming back in for their pets and their toys."
Scholars were also invited to participate in a coloring contest, and Sicily’s artwork stood out as the winning entry.
As the contest winner, Sicily kicked off her day with a tour of the LaGrave Fire Station, where she even met Smokey the dog, before taking a special ride to school in a brand-new firetruck.
