GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (GRPS) — A longtime educator at Coit Creative Arts Academy is being recognized as Teacher of the Year by the Down Syndrome Association of West Michigan.

 “For me, this award serves as a reflection of the incredible students who I have the privilege to teach,” Celine Elton said. “Today we celebrate their determination, joy, and unique approach they bring to the classroom and everyday life.”

Celine EltonWith 38 years in education, she has built a career rooted in every scholar’s potential. She has been at Coit for 21 years, where she works as a moderately cognitively impaired (MoCI) teacher.

“Celebrating with students and their families when they reach milestones at school and at home is incredibly meaningful,” she said. “Nothing beats the feeling of one of my students performing a task that others said they would never be able to do.”

Her journey into education was shaped by a strong personal connection to the community.

“Choosing to teach in GRPS was a deeply personal and powerful decision,” they said. “It stemmed from a desire to give back to the community where I grew up and have lived all of my life.”

As she receives this honor, Elton remains focused on what matters most: her scholars.

“It is an honor to be recognized as the Down Syndrome Association of West Michigan Teacher of the Year,” she said.
