“GRPS Champions” is a web series published every Monday celebrating the incredible work of GRPS team members.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (GRPS) – Amanda Palmer teaches math at Burton Middle School, making an impact that has shaped her family for decades – and now generations of others.

Palmer’s parents attended South High School and Grand Rapids Central High School, and her journey as an educator began when she student-taught at Madison Park Elementary.

“I knew GRPS was my calling,” Palmer said of her time at Madison Park. “My eyes were opened to so many different cultures and backgrounds. I knew GRPS was the place I needed to be.”

Now, with more than two decades of teaching experience in GRPS, Palmer finds joy in the lasting connections she makes with scholars.

“Having the opportunity to potentially make a difference in a kiddo’s life is such a rewarding experience,” she explained. “There are times when I am fortunate enough to have former students visit my classroom and share their life experiences with me. I am incredibly grateful and humbled when students take time from their busy days to come in and visit their middle school teacher.”

Palmer’s impact spans generations, as she now teaches the children of former students.

“These days, I have parents of students who are my former students,” she added. “The connections I have made with families are incredibly empowering and I will always be grateful for that piece.”

Teaching middle school is an adventure she wouldn’t trade for anything.

“Middle school teaching is the absolute most exciting profession ever!” she exclaimed. “The kids keep you on your toes 24/7 - never boring, always exciting. New adventures every day!”

With a passion for education and an unwavering commitment to her scholars, Amanda Palmer embodies what it means to be a GRPS Champion.
