“GRPS Champions” is a web series published every Monday celebrating the incredible work of GRPS team members.
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (GRPS) -- Erin Veldman has dedicated her career to creating a safe and supportive environment for scholars. A GRPS alum herself, she’s committed to giving back to the community that shaped her own education.
“What I enjoy most about my job is building relationships with students and their families and working as a team for the success of the scholar even well after they have left my classroom,” explained Veldman, a special education teacher at Alger Middle School. “I love providing a comfortable, safe classroom environment. As a resource teacher, what I love most is seeing my students’ smiles when they grasp a new concept.”
Veldman’s connection to GRPS runs deep. Teaching outside the district was never a consideration for her.
"As a product of GRPS, teaching anywhere else was never an option. I loved every part of my educational experience in GRPS, and I wanted to ‘pay back’ the community that helped me become the person I am today," she explained.
Over the years, Veldman has become a pillar of stability at Alger Middle School. Her consistency and commitment make a lasting difference for her scholars.
"The impact I play in my role specifically in the building where I teach is one of consistency,” Veldman said. “I take pride in the fact that when former students come to visit, they know Ms. Veldman will always be there. Current students know that I will always be there to show up for them even outside school hours. The bond that I build with students isn’t temporary. Once you walk through my classroom doors, you are always my student."
