GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (GRPS) — Grand Rapids Public Schools has cancelled all classes and after school activities for Thursday and Friday, June 1-2, 2023, due to the extreme heat.

With temperatures reaching the 90s on Wednesday and expected to be even warmer for the remainder of the week, Grand Rapids Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Leadriane Roby decided to cancel classes for the remainder of the week.

“Our team monitored temperatures in GRPS buildings throughout the day Wednesday and some of them were simply too warm,” Dr. Roby said. “That not only makes the learning environment a challenge, but it also raises a safety concern.”

Some GRPS schools are not equipped with air conditioning.

This closure includes the cancellation of all student-involved activities and field trips.

The district administration offices will remain open.
