GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (GRPS) — The Grand Rapids Public Schools district will remain closed Thursday, February 23, 2023 due to inclement weather.

West Michigan is in the midst of a significant winter storm that has made travel treacherous throughout the Grand Rapids area. The storm is expected to continue into early Thursday morning.

Thursday’s closure is a full district closure. District staff should not report.

“The weather has deteriorated driving conditions significantly,” GRPS Superintendent Leadriane Roby, Ph.D said. “While we want our learners in the classroom as much as possible, we have to make sure it’s safe to do so. With the way this storm has developed, it is obvious that keeping our scholars home is the safest course.”

All district activities will be cancelled for the day Thursday. District leaders will assess conditions throughout the storm and provide updates here on whether other closures or cancellations are necessary. Classes were also cancelled for Wednesday because of the storm system.

Because of the wind and freezing rain, there is a chance for widespread power outages in the wake of the storm. Families in need of assistance can contact the United Way by calling 2-1-1.
