GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (GRPS) – The Grand Rapids Board of Education has approved updates to eight key policies designed to better protect and support scholars.

The changes come after review by a Policy Advisory Committee made up of board members, administrators, families, and community partners. The committee focused on aligning GRPS policies with district values in response to community concerns about increasing immigration enforcement. 

Among the changes, the At-Risk Scholars policy now includes specific language addressing the needs of immigrants and refugees, the School Admissions policy now includes guidance for enrolling displaced scholars, and the Visitors to the School policy was strengthened to reinforce expectations around school safety. 

The Board of Education formally approved the revised policies at its July 21 work session.
