Dear GRPS Staff,
As we return from winter break, our state is seeing an increase in influenza (flu) cases. Influenza is a contagious respiratory virus that tends to spread between October and May. Most individuals with the flu get better on their own, but sometimes influenza can lead to further complications. You can help to stop the spread.
When to Stay Home
Scholars and staff should stay home if they are experiencing flu-like symptoms. Individuals should remain home until:
- They have been fever-free for at least 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medication, and
- Symptoms are improving.
Keeping sick individuals home helps prevent the spread of illness and protects vulnerable members of our community.
Common Flu Symptoms
- Fever or chills
- Cough
- Sore throat
- Runny or stuffy nose
- Body aches or muscle pain
- Headache
- Fatigue
- Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea (more common in children)
Prevention Reminders
- Stay home if you are feeling sick
- Wash hands frequently with soap and water
- Cover coughs and sneezes
- Avoid close contact with others when sick
- Consider wearing a mask around others
- Consider annual flu vaccination, which remains the best protection against influenza
Please contact your healthcare provider, or the Kent County Health Department at (616)-632-7228, if symptoms are severe or worsening, or if you have additional questions. Your healthcare provider can also advise whether antiviral medication may be appropriate.
Thank you for your continued support to reduce the spread of illness and keep our school community healthy.
Sincerely,
Kirstyn Wade, MSN RN
Director of Health Services
