GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (GRPS) -- For nearly three decades, Jill Staat has been an inspiring presence at GRPS, helping generations of scholars grow. As a Special Education Teacher at Alger Middle School, she says the most rewarding part of her work is the relationships she builds.
“I love the students that I work with,” said Staat. “My students are the best! They are funny, kind and eager to learn. Every student is different. Every day is different.”
The connections she forms with her scholars extend beyond middle school.
“I often receive messages from former students that have moved on to high school just saying hi, asking me to come to their sporting events or inviting me to their graduations,” she said. “I love hearing about their journeys once they leave Alger. Once they are my student, they are always my student.”
She began her career with GRPS 28 years ago, right after graduating from Grand Valley State University.
“GRPS took a chance on me 28 years ago, and I haven’t left,” she explained. “I never thought I would love teaching middle school until given the opportunity. Now I wouldn’t choose any other grade. I’m teaching at the level that makes me the happiest. This is where I want to be.”
Staat also credits her classroom colleague, Special Education Aide Kaqui Wright, for making her work possible.
“Kaqui is amazing! I couldn’t do my job without her,” she added.
Staat’s passion for teaching and lifelong dedication to her scholars make her a true GRPS Champion.
