GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (GRPS) — At Coit Creative Arts Academy, the power of art and community shines through every aspect of the school.
"Art is life. You celebrate it, you can paint it, you listen to it, you walk it," says Principal Dr. Lametria Johnson Eaddy. "Our scholars have their own canvas. Every child here has been created and designed in their own special way."
Her words reflect the school's commitment to fostering creativity and self-expression in every scholar.
Dr. Eaddy, a graduate of Howard University in Washington, DC, returned home to Michigan after college to teach in Saginaw. After teaching for 13 years, she transitioned into leadership. As a leader, Dr. Eaddy brings knowledge, energy, and nearly two decades of experience.
"Classroom knowledge, awareness, and connectivity are important. Scholars know who you are in that space. I want them to see my energy and feel my energy," she explains.
Her dedication to equity is at the core of her leadership philosophy.
"Know that I am a fair leader. Equity is at the forefront of the work that I do," she states. "Whatever their need is, it may be different from their classmates, but we provide the necessary resources for those situations."
Her passion for Coit Creative Arts Academy is unmistakable, and she invites others to experience the unique atmosphere that sets it apart.
"I could talk about it all day long, but you have to experience it. It's a Coit experience."
