GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (GRPS) – At Museum Middle School, Principal Kim Rowland is championing a unique educational experience that blends traditional classroom learning with hands-on exploration.
"There’s this natural curiosity that sometimes we miss out on in the traditional classroom," Rowland explained. "Once students experience learning beyond books and walls, they gain a deeper understanding. It changes who they are, deepens their curiosity, and makes their learning experiences more meaningful."
Rowland has been with Museum Middle School since it launched inside the Grand Rapids Public Museum in 2015. She started as a curriculum integration specialist before advancing to assistant principal. For the 2024-25 school year she was named principal.
Her approach is rooted in the belief that real-world experiences enhance learning.
"In a traditional school, field trips are occasional events, but here, our students almost daily have the opportunity to learn in public spaces,” she said. “It's hard work and different, but we keep doing it because we see the impact it has on kids."
Rowland hopes her scholars see her as firm, but gentle.
“I hold them to a high standard because I care deeply about their success. My goal is to guide them with understanding and respect,” she said.
Joining GRPS was an intentional choice for Rowland, who saw the district’s commitment to innovative education. "It’s not just about checking boxes here. It’s about building relationships with students, families, and the wider community."
For Rowland, leading Museum Middle School is more than a role—it’s a mission.
"Being part of this program from the start has been an honor and a privilege.”
