GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (GRPS) -- Jonathan Harper, the new principal of Congress Elementary School, embodies a commitment to education that runs deep in his roots.
"Education runs in my family," Harper shares, reflecting on his parents' careers as educators. "My mom taught kindergarten, first grade, and fourth grade for over 30 years. My dad was a secondary industrial arts teacher and also an administrator."
Harper’s journey into education wasn’t straightforward. Initially, he pursued a career in applied environmental biology.
"I got into education as a second career," he explains. "But I always had a passion for learning and teaching. I really enjoyed working with people and helping to support them."
This passion led him to return to school to earn his teaching certificate, a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction, and an education specialist degree in ed leadership, following in the footsteps of his parents. Harper’s career with Grand Rapids Public Schools began in the classroom, where he taught at Union High School and Creston High School. His career then evolved into roles as an instructional coach and curriculum director.
Now, as principal of Congress Elementary, Harper says his focus is to support his classroom leaders.
"My role is to support them as teachers, to be able to do their job to the best of their ability," Harper explained. "My hope is to really build upon the great things that are already happening here at Congress. It’s just exciting to continue to learn and lead and hopefully be a catalyst that helps grow the school and the community."
