GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (GRPS) — As Grand Rapids Public Schools (GRPS) explores future plans for the former East Leonard Elementary School site, the Grand Rapids Fire Department (GRFD) will temporarily occupy the building.

Under a two-year lease agreement, the City of Grand Rapids will use the East Leonard site to support the fire department's training, recruitment, testing, and building maintenance programs. The lease allows GRFD to enhance its operations while GRPS continues to evaluate long-term opportunities for the property.

As part of the agreement, the City of Grand Rapids will assume responsibility for maintaining both the building and surrounding grounds during the lease period. The playground will remain open for community use.

GRPS has formed a task force with city leaders to develop a comprehensive engagement plan to help foster the future use of multiple former school properties, including East Leonard. The district remains committed to finding solutions that benefit the community and contribute positively to the neighborhood.
