GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (GRPS) -- In the latest ‘Reimagine’ Vlog, Grand Rapids Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Leadriane Roby celebrates multiple Reimagine GRPS projects now complete, provides an update on the state budget, and reminds families that October 1 is Count Day!
Below is a letter Dr. Roby sent to all staff and families on September 25 about the state budget.
Dear GRPS Families & Staff,
Our state lawmakers are approaching an October 1 deadline to finalize the state budget. While this delay has created uncertainty around education funding, I want to reassure you that even if state lawmakers do not reach an agreement by the deadline, all GRPS schools will remain open.
State law mandates that lawmakers approve a K-12 school funding budget by July 1 each year so districts like ours can plan and operate with certainty. That deadline has passed, and no agreement has been reached. Without a budget, there’s a risk of a state government shutdown on October 1. Fortunately, our district has local revenue to continue operations if state funding is delayed.
In addition, our free breakfast and lunch programs are supported by federal funds, so they are not at risk if the Michigan School Meals Program is reduced or cut. That said, we are also monitoring possible changes at the federal level and will keep you informed if any updates impact GRPS.
As we look ahead, I want to emphasize the importance of attendance on Wednesday, October 1. Attendance is critical and counts every single day, but on Wednesday, October 1, it counts for 90% of your school’s funding. That funding directly supports our dedicated educators and the programs our scholars rely on. If your child is sick or unable to attend, please be sure to call the main office at your school to report an excused absence.
Thank you for choosing GRPS!
Sincerely,
Leadriane Roby, Ph.D.
Superintendent
