GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (GRPS) -- Two educators from Grand Rapids Public Schools have been recognized by the Groundswell Stewardship Initiative for their leadership in environmental stewardship and outdoor learning.
Brooke Bevins, a ninth-grade biology teacher at Ottawa Hills High School, received the 2026 Sprout Teacher of the Year Award. The award honors educators who have worked with the organization for fewer than three years.
Bevins was recognized for engaging scholars in outdoor learning and stewardship projects. She recently completed her second full Groundswell project and has become a champion for the program within GRPS.
Her scholar-led project focuses on beautifying an outdoor campus space by adding native plants to the school courtyard and creating outdoor learning opportunities alongside nearby middle school scholars.
Joe Uzarski of Grand Rapids Montessori Academy received the inaugural 2026 Rooted in Service Award.
Uzarski, who is retiring after 26 years in education, has partnered with Groundswell for more than 13 years. He is a dedicated environmental steward who inspires scholars through place-based learning experiences and stewardship projects.
His commitment extends beyond the classroom, including hauling cafeteria compost to his home and encouraging scholars and colleagues to care for the environment.
Groundswell created the Rooted in Service Award to recognize educators who have made a lasting impact through environmental education and stewardship.
